Permanent Identification

Why Microchip?
Peace of Mind

Definitive Proof

All pets should wear collar tags imprinted with the name and phone number of their owner, but only microchipping provides permanent identification that cannot fall off or be removed. 6-8 million pets enter animal shelters every year, and animal control officers as well as rescue shelters scan them for chips. If a dog or cat is stolen, a chip’s registration provides definitive proof of ownership. This is particularly helpful in the case of stolen pets, when ownership may be in dispute.

Simple Procedure

How do microchips work?

Dog and cat microchipping is an easy procedure. A veterinarian simply injects the chip, (about the size of a grain of rice), beneath the surface of your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades.

The process takes only a few seconds, and no anesthetic is required. Registering your pet’s chip with a service provider and national pet registry will then activate a unique I.D. number. It is important to keep contact information current and have your veterinarian scan your pet yearly to confirm that information is accurate and up to date. If a lost animal is found by animal control officers, the I.D. number of the chip can be recovered by scanner, and entered into a pet recovery service to help locate the owner. According to the Home Again Fact Sheet, only 3-4% of dogs & cats arriving at shelters are microchipped. Without tags or a chip most won’t return home. Microchips help reunite hundreds of thousands of companion animals with their owners every year.
